Since 2007, Solidaritest, Belgium’s corporate solidarity awards ceremony, has been the annual venue for promoting solidarity within companies towards the most vulnerable.

Polygone was in the running for the Best Practices Awards category, which recognises innovative projects with an impact on the local community, and which illustrate the commitment of those involved in the project.

www.light-theworld.com was an online virtual choir. The principle was that anyone could sign up to the website, posting their photo, customising their character (colour and movement) and sharing their best wishes with the whole world. The member created would join the choir appearing on the website. This act of solidarity, entirely free of charge, would increase for every registration the donations made to the Belgian Red Cross for a project aimed at getting street children in Kinshasa back to school.

The Light the World initiative was the brainchild of the Polygone communications agency. The entire agency structure lent its support to the project, publicising the message and the action, creating the visual and technical aspects of the website, writing the lyrics and arranging the music for the song broadcast on the website, and making contact with definite and potential players in the project.

Polygone made the first commitment to pay the Red Cross the equivalent of €0.5 per registration to join the choir, but several other companies agreed to support and participate in the initiative once a certain number of participants had been registered.
